My Bag of Tricks

So here we are again… Let’s talk product must haves!! (sorry its been longer then I promised)

So following on from my last post lets talk about some of my favourites to have in your makeup bag.  As a makeup artist of 15 years, my bag of tricks has certainly grown over the years, but can gladly say I have recently parted with some old favourites for some new, and you should do a beauty bag edit too!

1st item in the bag of tricks which I was introduced to whilst working at Artists@play in their backstage teams in 2018, was the MAC C+ Coral Grass Softening Lotion.  I didn’t quite get the hype until I saw great results instantly on not only the models with tired and textured skin backstage, but my bridal and special occasion clients too.  It is that small difference in applying this prepping spray to resurface dull looking skin, in addition to a great primer that can give the skin the ultimate finish.  At around $40 a bottle its not completely out of reach either.

From prep to the ultimate setting spray and I thought I had tried them all, but you guessed it, I have found something even better then what we talked about on my last blog!  Introducing the High Performance 24 Hour Wear Setting Spray from Cover FX, and what I am about to say goes against everything us makeup artists recommend when it comes to removing makeup, but if you slept in your makeup you can rest assure that you will probably look just as good when you wake up in the morning….

Cover FX is and will always have prime real estate in my kit and makeup bag simply due to its functionality. It’s not gimmicky and it does exactly as you expect it to, almost always exceeding expectations.

Living in Perth I am sometimes super glad we don’t have a Sephora here…. I can say everytime I have travelled to Melbourne , My bag of tricks starts busting at the seams with all of the goodness I am able to physically touch, feel and unfortunately spend all my money on, at Sephora in Melbourne Central.

As they say When in Rome I throw my dollar bills yo’ up in the air, and come home with some new friends (below), who have been featuring in a lot of my client looks recently.

All hail and please stand for this stunner from BECCA………The

BECCA x Khloé Kardashian & Malika Haqq Bronze, Blush & Glow Palette

The softly defined sculpt you get from this palette has to be seen to be believed. The product looks seemingly undetectable on, but as you move the light bounces so effortlessly off the high points of your face, whilst the soft bronze contour brings the curves of your amazing bone structure to life.

You can’t make a mistake with this product at all, so absolutely great for someone who wants a palette that they can’t overload and also use across the facial features including eyes and even dusting some over the lips for additional colour with balm.  The best $66 you have spent in your life!

If I had not visited Sephora and physically seen  and swathed this palette, I may have never purchased it anyway due to the marketing linked to the palette itself (it just would have never got my attention as a Kardashian related product). This probably also means that Sephora should stay on the east coast, otherwise who knows what will happen to me if they open one up here!!

So the next is not actually something I have but will invest in as my eyeshadows continuously hit pan. I am not a de-potter either as I just don’t have the patience so I forecast a massive throw out to make way for these 3 great palettes by Tarte. I have to say my ultimate shadow favourites are actually Violet Voss followed by Tarte, but the Violet Voss palettes come with too many “EXTRA” and BLINGY colours that although amazing, you just don’t use. So naturally, when I aw these in Sephora I got a better feel for a palette that would be utilised evenly and thoroughly, unlike what I have now.

*GASP* I held back and am patiently waiting to make more holes in my palettes before purchasing this whole collection, and replacing all shadows in my current kit.  I will save so much room and one thing I can say is that there will be a nice array of highlight colours amongst these palettes which i have always had problems keeping in stock previously.

With a warm palette,  cool palette and in between focus on mattes palette, Tarte has my colour theory OCD all taken care of.

Sooooooo I promised I wouldn’t make this one as long this time, but I just can’t stop, so one more thing before I go…. EYE CREAM!

I have found a good one guys!  Amazing teamed with makeup product and concealer(which is hard to find!), and has literally turned the texture of my under eye area around, since using it from April this year.  You may have heard of a cute little American brand called IT Cosmetics, and although their products look super clinical and once again not as gimmicky as its counterparts, the claims on the packaging and their stand in Sephora are legit!

This version of their eye cream also comes in a face cream and although you can get it in a mini size from Sephora, I had to have SOME restraint as I dodged all the impulse buys at their strategically design Checkout area 😉

Above and beyond their eye cream, their CC cream with SPF 50 is also an honourable mention and bas been one of My favourite products to wear in Summer due to its high level sunscreen, light diffusing coverage, flexible feel and dry down finish unlike other CC Creams on the market that claim to be similar.

Products are always changing and being reformulated to give us the best of what we need and the opposite is true that sometimes something that once was amazing needs to move aside for the newer improved version.

When deciding to spend some money on your beauty bag tricks, do yourself a favour and look online to the bigger online cosmetic companies for samples size products (minis) as they are usually sold at a fraction of the cost and allow you to try without committing to such a high price point.  If you are a makeup artist, the sample size packaging is usually better for your kit, and much cheaper way to building a wide variety of solutions for your clients.

Another way to try before you buy is booking in a service wth an artist that has a great mixture of high end , pro-quality and top pick drugstore product to see if the hype is true!

Thanks for reading & I’d love to know what you would like to to hear about in future blogs!!

Up next….
